Florence
at Night
by
Elizabeth Wareham
The
stagnant smell of sewage
Mountains of
dark clouds covering the receding sun
A stray plane heads vertically toward the horizon
Push bikes lay temporarily abandoned
A few scooters still dangerously patrol the street
Once bustling places are now deserted
There are only traces of activity remaining
A few scraps of paper and other littered items
The sweet smell of fresh coffee beans glides on the cool night air
Old and new buildings mingle together
The new, exciting in design
The old, absorbing in their delapedatedness
A man curses on the bench below
Cars, old and new, but still the same, line the streets end to end
A tired mother cradles her child
The trees and plants turn from spring green to a multitude of colors
A finder and a keeper
The blank Blanket of Night covers the sky
One lonely star draws attention away from the dark, ominous night
Roads calm, as the reason to drive is necessity
The sidewalks slow and rise, and slow again, as clubs and pubs are closed for the night
Then
the city will be quiet
Although a city like Florence is never quiet
Magnificence and mystic ring out loud and clear to every passerby.

She has found in her writing offers a creative outlet and a hidden talent that she hopes people can enjoy, now and in years to come.
